The Rudi Sedlmayerhalle was constructed as a basketball arena for the Olympic games in 1972 and is closed since 2003.
The arena is going to be re-opened in fall 2011, re-branded as Audi Dome for the basketball team of the FC Bayern München.
Intensive refurbishment was needed as well as the construction of a VIP and restaurant area. The circulation area surrounding the arena is to receive food outlets, event spaces and exhibition niches. Audi, one of the premium partners of FC Bayern München, will utilise one of the event platforms designed by Grund Architekten.
Existing services and structure had to be concealed in order to maximise the exhibition area and maintain the clear and minimalistic corporate identity guidelines of the Audi AG. The sloping ceiling and tapering walls create the effect of a ‘framed picture’; Light grey lacquered wall panelling is covering openings and risers whilst providing flexible access. The illuminated ceiling achieves an even illumination of the exhibition space below. The dark grey sealed screed creates an effective contrast to the light walls and ceiling
